Pre-order now: “St. Bartholomew’s—A History of the Dublin Parish” by Dr. Kenneth Milne

To celebrate its 150th anniversary (1867-2017), Saint Bartholomew’s Church announces with great pleasure the upcoming publication of the expanded and updated book, St. Bartholomew’s—A History of the Dublin Parish, written by noted historian Dr. Kenneth Milne.

The original book was published in 1963 to celebrate the one hundred year history of Saint Bartholomew’s Church. In the fifty years since its publication, much has changed and yet the many traditions of Saint Bartholomew’s Church abound. Subsequent to the 1963 edition, the 150th anniversary book will contain descriptions and colour plates documenting particularly notable events such as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit in 1967, the introduction of vestments by the Reverend Maurice Carey in the early 70s, Cardinal Cathal Daly’s visit as a guest preacher in the 1980s, the formation of the girls’ choir in 2003, the history of the current €1 million renovation project due for completion in late 2018, and interviews with past and current members of the clergy, choristers and Select Vestry members.

The original edition of St. Bartholomew’s—A History of the Dublin Parish was an exceptional project in its detailed witness to the church’s history since its consecration in 1867, two years before the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland.  From the controversy surrounding its high churchmanship in the Anglican/Episcopalian tradition to the design and architecture of the church, which remains to this day one of the most striking examples of Episcopalian High Church architecture in Ireland, Dr. Milne documented Saint Bartholomew’s early history and its subsequent development into the early 1960s. He gave voice to its pioneering vicars as they built a congregation and led the church in its early years.

Dr. Milne’s new edition continues Saint Bartholomew’s unique story, covering the contemporary concerns and efforts of its present and incumbent vicars, the faithful workings of its Select Vestry, changes to its practices, and the history of the church’s choral music tradition as it reflects on the church liturgy.

This book is expected to be available early in 2018.
