The Gaudete Singers directed by David Leigh

Join us for a glimpse of spring (Frühlingsblick) as we enter the romantic world of Max Reger. His list of works reveals an amazingly extensive output for a life that ended in 1916 at the young age of 43. Like his near contemporaries, Mahler and Strauss, Reger responded deeply and imaginatively to the German Romantic poetic tradition. This is reflected in the secularDrei sechsstimmige Chöre(Three six part motets) sung in this concert.

The four Lenten motets, written in 1939, are part of the body of religious music written by Poulenc after the death of several friends. These pieces are as thrilling to listen to as they are to sing; challenging, uplifting, mysterious and evocative of the Lenten season.

David Leigh will be playing Reger’s wonderful Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue in E minor. Probably better known for his organ music, this work was composed in 1913 and is one of the last of Reger’s large scale organ pieces. This is a rare opportunity to hear this great fugue in a concert performance; to quote the composer, “Others write fugues, I live them.”
